Acupuncture For Stroke

by | Feb 23, 2018 | Acupuncture for Stroke

In China, the birthplace of acupuncture, stroke is the biggest indication for acupuncture use.  This may seem surprising, given acupuncture’s reputation for pain relief!

Every two seconds, someone in the world will suffer a stroke and the effects can be devastating.

Acupuncture Care for Stroke

In the UK there are over 1.2 million stroke survivors, each dealing with a range of symptoms caused by the bleed in their brain. To develop the specialist skills needed to offer acupuncture care for stroke I trained with Claudia Citkovitz, the Director of Acupuncture Services at the NYU Lutheran Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York.  Her team have been treating both acute and chronic stroke symptoms since 2003.

Clinical studies have proven the effectiveness of acupuncture for helping stroke victims, and this approach is recognised by the World Health Organisation.

Acupuncture can support clients with their recovery from stroke symptoms that include;

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Pain
  • Aphasia: difficulties with speaking, reading, writing, and understanding language
  • Constipation
  • Incontinence (both faecal and urinary)
  • Depression, low mood, and anxiety
  • Low energy
  • Motor impairment: problems with movement and co-ordination of legs and arms

Acupuncture is suited to personal needs; the effects of stroke are as unique to the individual as their personality.  The recovery process can be long and frustrating, leading to feelings of isolation and anger.  Acupuncture can help relieve this emotional burden by improving the balance of mood chemicals in the brain such as serotonin, our ‘happy hormone’.

How does Acupuncture help with stroke recovery?

Acupuncture helps your body get the most out of its own healing resources.  To help with stroke rehabilitation, the needles stimulate blood circulation and nervous system messengers, helping to;

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support the release of mood elevating and pain-killing endorphins like serotonin
  • Modulate the stress response
  • Activate regulatory centres in the brain

Acupuncture is safe to use alongside conventional medical treatments for stroke such as medication, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.

Acupuncture to support stroke prevention

If you currently have conditions that increase the risk of stroke, or if stroke and cardiovascular disease runs in your family, acupuncture can help modify these risks.  If you have any of the following, talk to me about how acupuncture may be of benefit;

Prevention is better than cure, and it’s easier to take steps now to improve your health than after a serious event like stroke.

To help modify these risk factors I will also discuss diet and lifestyle measures and can direct you to other healthcare professionals for further support such as an herbalist or nutritionist.

I am one of the TOP 3 Acupuncturists in the UK and have specialist training in stroke rehabilitation and recovery.

Your health is in safe hands.
