Acupuncture Proven To Work – Says World Health Organisation

I understand these concerns and could not practice acupuncture if I didn’t feel confident about the research and evidence base behind it!

The problem with RCTs

Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are well suited to drug research, where you can give the medication to one group of participants, and a placebo pill or different drug to another.  The groups can be double blind too, where neither the participants or researchers know who is taking what.

However, RCTs are not well suited to assessing other forms of treatment.  With alternative healthcare, it can be almost impossible to disguise the treatment, and the therapeutic relationship between client and practitioner plays a significant role in how well a client accepts and responds to treatment.  It is hard to separate this factor from the actual treatment itself: even if someone is receiving ‘fake’ or ‘sham’ acupuncture, there is still an element of therapeutic care going on, potentially influencing the result.

The Holistic Approach

Another problem with using RCTs for treatments like acupuncture is the personalised nature of these approaches.  I see many people with headaches, or back ache for example, and they all receive different treatments – it is impossible to standardise them as each client is unique!  This makes it hard to perform randomised controlled trials.

The Evidence for Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture

Despite these difficulties, there is a wealth of research and evidence for TCM Acupuncture, covering a wide range of health conditions.

The World Health Organisation says acupuncture is proven to work. They have compiled a report detailing all the health conditions that acupuncture has proven to help in controlled clinical trials.  The full report can be downloaded here. These conditions include;

As you can see virtually every system in the body can be helped by acupuncture!  The treatments are safe, effective, and in many cases, life changing.

Acupuncture works alongside conventional medications too; you don’t have to choose between treatments, if you must take prescription drugs you can still benefit from the power of acupuncture.  My treatments may even be able to ease some of the unpleasant side-effects of these drugs.
