Balancing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is another highly complex female reproductive disorder. It is complex because the exact cause of the syndrome remains unknown and because it can present with such a huge variety of symptoms – many women have PCOS and never know about it whilst others suffer constantly from pain, absent periods, excess facial hair, poor blood sugar balance and weight gain.

In PCOS the ovaries carry lots of swollen, immature follicles which look like cysts. In a normal cycle, each month a follicle matures and releases an egg into the fallopian tube which if fertilised, can develop into a baby. In PCOS, the follicles never mature properly and no egg is released. The carefully orchestrated dance of sex hormones is thrown into disarray resulting in excessive levels of oestrogen and testosterone and very low amounts of progesterone.

It is these imbalanced hormones that produce the varied symptoms of PCOS including:

  • Infrequent or absent periods
  • Excessive facial and body hair
  • Central weight gain
  • Acne
  • Difficulty in managing blood sugar levels
  • Infertility

Of course these symptoms are very distressing for women and can impact heavily upon their emotional wellbeing and self esteem.

As with all acupuncture treatments, managing PCOS begins with a careful examination of the medical history, lifestyle habits, diet and general health.

I support all aspects of health with my treatments, including the nervous system, health of the blood, digestive function and detoxification pathways as these are the foundations to health.

Detoxification pathways in the liver and bowel are particularly important when managing PCOS as the excessive amounts of oestrogen and testosterone need to be processed and eliminated from the body.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is proven to bring relief from symptoms of PCOS in several ways:

  • By regulating the production and release of hormones in the reproductive organs
  • Improving blood flow and circulation to the ovaries
  • Influencing cell receptor sites for hormones
  • Increasing insulin sensitivity and blood sugar balance to help with central weight gain and high blood sugar levels
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Encouraging relaxation and release of tension in the nervous system

As you can see, acupuncture provides a safe and holistic approach to this complex condition. The aim is to get your body back in balance, with a healthy circulation of hormones and body fluids and calm nourished nervous system. As with all complex conditions, at least one course of acupuncture sessions will be required. The treatments have an accumulative effect and your body will learn to respond to the needling, meaning the benefits of the sessions will last longer each time.
