It’s been just over two months since I reopened the acupuncture clinic after the restrictions eased, and it has been fantastic to see my wonderful clients again!
So many people have been suffering during lockdown. Coronavirus may have hit but that didn’t mean every other health issue disappeared. People have struggled with chronic pain, depression, weight gain, high levels of stress and anxiety – all of which can be effectively managed with Acupuncture.
Right from the beginning when I opened my clinic over 14 years ago I put strict cleaning and hygiene measures in place, so it was simple to meet the guidelines for reopening after lockdown. The British Acupuncture Council Code of Safe Practice sets the standards I must meet and maintain every day. These include:
Following these guidelines has meant that I have neither spread or contracted anything to or from any of my patients. I hope this reassures you about coming for an appointment – my clinic is as safe and welcoming as ever!
Late summer is the perfect time to start preparing for the latter part of the year. Autumn, with its energies of change and transition will soon be here and this is a great time to start building our immune resilience to colds and flu.
Prevention is better than cure when it comes to immunity. It is better to do what we can to reduce the likelihood of getting an infection, rather than wait and see what happens if we pick something up.
Research shows acupuncture has a profound influence on immunity. Needling specific points can:
A major part of our immune system resides in the gut, in the form of bacteria and yeasts known as the gut microbiome. These microbes communicate constantly with all parts of the body – including immune cells. If you are struggling with any digestive complaints – Irritable Bowel Syndrome, bloating, excess gas, heartburn – your gut microbiome may be affected. It’s important to get help for these symptoms so that your nutrient absorption and immunity isn’t compromised. I see many clients with all manner of digestive conditions, for which Acupuncture is highly effective.
Acupuncture is an holistic form of care and I always offer lifestyle support to my clients to complement their treatments. When it comes to building immune resilience, it is vital to look at:
Paying attention to these areas brings benefits not just to our immunity, but our energy and overall well being too.
Are you looking to strengthen your immune defences?

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]The usual winter flu season is being made much worse this year with the dramatic spread of Coronavirus. Here in the UK, Government advice is focusing on regular handwashing, using alcohol hand sanitisers, avoiding physical contact, and self-isolating if you have been exposed to the virus.
These are all effective and useful measures, but what else can be done to reduce our chances of picking up the infection - and easing the symptoms if we do?
Traditional Chinese Medicine has much to offer for immune support, with both acupuncture and herbs.
Research has shown that acupuncture can relieve the symptoms of colds and flu by:
Enhancing the actions of natural killer cells – our immune system’s SAS soldiers
Modulating the number and ratios of immune cell to optimise our defences
Stimulating nerves to release endorphins and other chemicals that reduce pain
Increasing local microcirculation to alleviate inflammation and swelling
As well as managing actual symptoms, acupuncture can also be used on a regular basis to keep your immune system strong and help prevent infection in the first place. After all, prevention is better and easier than cure!
Chinese herbs are frequently used alongside needling, to enhance and deepen the therapeutic effects. These herbs have a long history of use for managing colds and influenza, and the prescriptions are always tailored to suit your specific needs. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach; in Traditional Chinese Medicine the treatment is always unique to the patient’s pattern of symptoms.
How you look after yourself in-between acupuncture sessions is just as important for immunity as the acupuncture itself. This is why I provide diet and lifestyle advice to my clients.
According to my colleague Registered Nutritionist Sally Duffin, some of the best foods and nutrients for immune health are:
For more Corona-specific advice, there is research around particular nutrients that can help defend against RNA viruses. These include:
- Spirulina
- N-Acetylcysteine (NAC): a precursor to the powerful antioxidant glutathione. Other glutathione precursors include broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus
- Selenium: best food sources are Brazil nuts, coconut, shellfish
- Beta glucans
- Elderberry
(ref: M.F. McCarty and J.J. DiNicolantonio, Nutraceuticals have potential for boosting the type 1 interferon response to RNA viruses including including influenza and coronavirus Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases)

The annual Acupuncture Awareness Week celebrations will soon be here: this year it runs from 6th – 12th March, and aims to increase people’s awareness of just how many conditions Acupuncture can support.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture is often only thought of for treating pain, but it is in fact a complete medical system that can help with almost any health condition you might have!
TCM Acupuncture is a traditional healing method originating from China over 2500 years ago. Unlike many traditional healing techniques which remain localised to a specific culture, the power and popularity of acupuncture has spread rapidly across the world, with acupuncture practitioners now working in hundreds of countries. Here in the UK 2.3 million people enjoy acupuncture treatments every year!
One of the most popular reasons for clients coming to my clinic is pain relief. TCM Acupuncture has been show to effectively relieve pain of all kinds;
In 2002 the WHO published a detailed report evaluating the evidence and research supporting TCM Acupuncture as an effective healthcare option for a vast range of conditions.
Acupuncture has so much to offer for health and wellbeing! This is a taster of the many health conditions TCM Acupuncture can be used for;
As you can see, TCM Acupuncture works on the body rebalancing all its systems and restoring health and vitality.
If you’d like to find out more about how TCM Acupuncture could help you regain your well-being call me, Tiziana, TODAY on 07788 633292 or email at info@yorktraditionalacupuncture.co.

As part of my Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments I regularly practise abdominal acupuncture to improve digestion with my clients.
Many ancient Chinese medical texts focus on abdominal acupuncture diagnosis, with the abdomen being described as the ‘root and foundation’ of a person. So many vital organs are found in the abdominal region including the digestive tract, which we know now communicates constantly with your brain via its own nervous system called the enteric nervous system.
Think of a time you felt nervous or anxious. Did it affect your digestion? Did you experience ‘butterflies’ in your tummy, or any aches and pains in your abdomen? Our brain and digestive system are talking to each other all the time, which means our thoughts and emotions have an immediate impact on how we digest, assimilate, and utilise food.
I see many clients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a condition that is massively influenced by stress. The way their brain is processing stress and the signals it is sending to their gut causes unpleasant and distressing symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, wind, and bloating.
One of the main highways of communication between your brain and gut is via the vagus nerve. This is the largest nerve in the body, extending from the brain deep into the abdominal area, carrying nerve fibres that control both sensations and movement. Over-stimulation or disruption of this nerve can cause many health problems, particularly in the digestive system.
The vagus nerve and all the other smaller nerves in the enteric nervous system produce neurotransmitters: chemicals that carry the messages from one nerve to another.
Serotonin is well known as being the neurotransmitter responsible for elevating mood and feelings of satisfaction and positivity. But did you know that over 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut not the brain? It is part of the gut-brain communication and influences gut function.
I can gather a lot of information about your health by looking at the skin of your abdomen: its colour, texture, and temperature reveal a great deal. I may also gently palpate your abdomen, to check for any lumps or anomalies that may guide my diagnosis.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the flow of Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) around the body. Blockages in Qi can lead to areas of stagnation, poor circulation, and accumulation of toxins which in turn manifests as ill-health and dis-ease.
Needling certain acupuncture points stimulates the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins which can ease pain, promote relaxation, and elevate mood.
There are 3 layers to your abdomen that can be stimulated accordingly;
No two treatments are the same and I will select the abdominal acupuncture points that are most relevant to your needs.

Are you suffering from the severe fatigue and muscle pains of Fibromyalgia?
This condition affects around 1 in 25 people in the UK and is something I see frequently in my Clinic. Fibromyalgia affects many more women than men – the reasons for this remain unknown – and can be associated with other life-limiting conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, headaches, depression and Restless Leg Syndrome.
The name Fibromyalgia literally translates as pain (algia) coming from muscles (my) and connective tissues (fibro). The exact cause of it varies from person to person but is often associated with stress, infections and changes in the balance of chemicals in the brain that regulate pain sensitivity.
Unfortunately most medications prescribed for fibromyalgia do little to relieve the condition. Long term use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen and Naproxen can lead to digestive problems as the lining of the stomach gets damaged and inflamed: stronger painkillers are not recommended because of the risk of addiction.
Anti-depressants are sometimes used to relieve any depression and anxiety caused by the condition, and can also ease sleeping problems.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture is proven to bring lasting relief to fibromyalgia patients. A recent study in Spain compared acupuncture with a placebo treatment. The group of 164 patients were assigned to either an acupuncture group or a placebo group (in this study, the placebo was sham-acupuncture) and all participants received their selected therapy for 10 weeks.
At the end of the trial, those receiving TCM acupuncture reported significant decreases in pain and improvements in fatigue, anxiety and depression, compared to the placebo group.
These improvements were shown to be sustained at a 12 month follow up too.
TCM Acupuncture brings relief from fibromyalgia by;
Gentle exercise can improve fibromyalgia symptoms – the trick is to exercise enough to feel the benefit but not to overwork the muscles! Yoga, swimming and outdoor walking are good forms of exercise to begin with.
Nutrition has much to offer for fibromyalgia. Dark green leafy vegetables, buckwheat and cashew nuts are all excellent sources of magnesium, a key mineral for muscle health and pain management. Oily fish, nuts and seeds provide healthy essential fats that can help reduce pain and inflammation.
Drinking plenty of water (at least 1.5l per day) is vital – dehydrated muscles will be painful muscles!
Epsom salt baths
Many fibromyalgia sufferers find warm baths soothing to their symptoms. Adding 1-2 cups of Epsom salts to a bath can make a huge difference: the salts are rich in magnesium which eases cramps and muscle pains and calms the nervous system.

Stress, anxiety and depression affect people of all ages and can strike at anytime in life. In my Clinic I see the profound negative effects these conditions have on my clients’ lives, but also, the amazing benefits of natural treatments like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture can bring.
Because of this I am thrilled to be taking part in a national research project between Anxiety UK, the national charity for anxiety sufferers, and the British Acupuncture Council.
The aim of this project is to strengthen the evidence base for TCM Acupuncture as a way to manage anxiety disorders and to support the establishment of acupuncture as a treatment option for members of Anxiety UK.
According to Anxiety UK:
These are shocking statistics and this is just the tip of the iceberg! The stigma of mental health issues stops many people from asking for help and support and they end up carrying the burden alone, becoming increasingly isolated and distressed.
Stress, anxiety and depression affect every organ and system in your body. This makes TCM Acupuncture a perfect mode of treatment as it is holistic in nature, balancing every aspect of your wellbeing.
Research has shown TCM Acupuncture to be effective in managing stress, anxiety and depression through:
My treatments are safe and effective and can be used alongside conventional medications such as tranquilisers and anti-depressants and may even help reduce any unwanted drug side effects.
Are you overwhelmed with stress and constant demands?
Exhausted, anxious and fearful every day?
Are your relationships suffering because these feelings?
