Male Fertility and Everyday Health – Part 2

Male infertility acupuncture

Building Healthy Sperm

In this second article on Male Fertility I focus on exactly how acupuncture enhances the quality and development of healthy, viable sperm.

In Part 1, we looked at the environmental toxins, lifestyle habits and foods which can impair reproductive function.  Working together as a couple to make positive changes to your diet and lifestyle for at least 3 months before trying to naturally conceive can rapidly increase your chances of success – I say 3 months because it takes approximately this length of time for eggs to mature and sperm to develop.

Enjoying regular acupuncture sessions during this preparatory phase will deeply support your efforts, ensuring you are both in optimal health and laying solid foundations for the health of your unborn child.

Acupuncture & Sperm Production

Several studies have highlighted the many ways in which Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture supports and enhances sperm production, motility and function:

  • Increases testosterone levels: imbalanced testosterone affects male libido, erectile function and sperm production.
  • Improves sperm maturation: sperm must be able to mature properly in order to be effective.
  • Lowers scrotal temperature: raised scrotal temperature affects sperm production and quality
  • Reduces inflammation: inflammation is a sign of both damage and immune stimulation, bodily processes that are counter-productive for reproduction
  • Improves blood quality and microcirculation: healthy sperm manufacture and maturation is dependent on access to nutrients such as proteins, essential fats, vitamins and minerals all of which are delivered by the blood.

Stress, Digestion & Sperm Health

In addition to focusing specifically on reproductive health my acupuncture treatments deal with wider health issues that are impacting on sperm manufacture and quality.  For example, chronic stress and digestive issues like IBS and indigestion are two of the most common health complaints seen today and both have a strong negative effect on fertility.

Chronic stress causes elevated levels of stress hormones which disrupt testosterone production and lower libido – basically, your body does not want you to procreate whilst you are under stress!  It is Mother Nature’s way of preserving your energy!  By supporting your nervous system and balancing stress hormones, acupuncture can gently redress this issue, encouraging healthy testosterone levels and libido.

Poor digestion leads to poor nutrient absorption and a build up of toxicity.  Acupuncture can support the production of digestive juices to enhance nutrient absorption and encourage smooth regular bowel movements; ensuring toxins are eliminated comfortably from your body.
