If you are the 1 in every 7 adults who suffers with migraines and headaches, Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture could be the answer you’ve been looking for.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends TCM Acupuncture for the treatment of migraines and headaches thanks to its history of evidence and proven effectiveness.

This week (4th – 10th September 2016) TCM Acupuncturists all over the UK are celebrating Migraine Awareness Week, working hard to raise awareness of the effectiveness and success of their treatments and to make sure people know there is a safe, proven alternative method of treatment available.

What is migraine?

Migraine is more than just a headache; the symptoms are caused by poorly understood electrical changes in brain activity that result in a variety of symptoms. A strong throbbing pain is usually located on one side of the head and can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and in some cases, diarrhoea. Visual disturbances such as bright lights, sensitivity to light or blurred vision can precede the actual headache – these symptoms are known as migraine aura. There may also be pins and needles or tingling sensations in other parts of the body, changes in appetite or sudden thirst. Taking strong painkillers can relieve some of the pain but most sufferers recover by resting in a darkened room and may need to do so for several days.

What about menstrual migraines?

A lot of women experience an increase in migraines and headaches around the time of their period. This is linked to the complex hormonal changes occurring at this time: progesterone levels are relatively higher than oestrogen just before the period but both hormones drop once menstruation starts.

As part of my holistic TCM treatments I focus on supporting your body in managing these hormone fluctuations.

How can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can bring relief to a migraine in progress and also help reduce the frequency of attacks. It does so by;

  • Stimulating nerves to release endorphins and other natural chemicals that ease pain and alter pain processing in the brain
  • Reducing inflammation in blood vessels, muscles and other tissues
  • Modulating blood flow in the brain
  • Modulating levels of serotonin in the brain: this neurotransmitter has been linked with the onset of migraines

Needles are as fine as a hair!

Some people are put off from trying Acupuncture for migraines because of a fear of needles. Let me reassure you, Acupuncture needles are sterile, safe and the no thicker than a human hair! There is sometimes a slight prickling sensation when the needles go in but after that you can lie back and relax and let the treatment do its work!
