Irregular Periods And Covid 19 – Can Acupuncture Help?

by | Sep 24, 2022 | Acupuncture for women's health, Coronavirus

Since the covid-19 vaccination programme began I have been seeing more and more clients with menstrual irregularities such as irregular periods, heavier bleeds, and more painful periods.  These are women who didn’t have period problems before taking the vaccine but have done ever since. Fortunately, acupuncture can help rebalance the menstrual cycle and manage painful periods.

How does the covid vaccine affect periods?

As researchers are now discovering, the covid-19 jabs are affecting women’s reproductive health in many ways.  A preliminary study published earlier this year found that approximately 50–60% of reproductive-age women who received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine reported menstrual cycle irregularities, regardless of the type of vaccine.  This percentage was slightly higher after the second dose, with 60-70% of women reporting a negative effect on menstruation.

These effects included periods being longer or shorter than usual, periods arriving earlier or later than usual, and periods being heavier than usual.

An editorial article in the British Medical Journal states that more than 30, 000 reports of these events had been made to UK’s yellow card surveillance scheme for adverse drug reactions by September 2021.

Because these effects are being noticed across all the vaccines, it is thought that the problem may be an immune system reaction to the jab, rather than a response to an individual ingredient in the vaccine.

How does Acupuncture help menstrual irregularities?

Women’s health is one of my acupuncture specialities.  Whether the problem is heavier periods, an irregular cycle, or more painful periods, acupuncture can help.

My treatments are uniquely tailored to each client, and I consider your previous menstrual history, immune health, general wellbeing, and current diet and lifestyle. I then work with your body to help restore balance and harmony to your menstrual cycle.

Acupuncture influences menstrual health by:

  • Stimulating the release of serotonin and other pain-relieving endorphins in the brain.
  • Increasing nitric oxide production in blood vessels. Nitric oxide encourages healthy blood flow and muscle relaxation.
  • Regulating prostaglandins, hormonal messengers that influence inflammation.
  • Decreasing tension in the muscle walls of the womb to alleviate cramping.
  • Supporting the endocrine system to balance the release of female hormones.

What do my clients say?

During my time in practice, I have worked with hundreds of women with painful periods, endometriosis, irregular cycles, and heavy bleeding.  This is what two of my clients have to say about their acupuncture treatments:

“I had a conversation with Tiziana re painful periods (which I had had all my life) and that’s when she told me that painful periods are NOT normal and that we as women are not supposed or “programmed” to experience them. Once again, I was curious to see if that was true and if acupuncture could help with that condition as well. I only had two treatments and to my surprise, I haven’t had a painful period since!”

“I first contacted Tiziana for acupuncture to help regain my periods and with the goal of getting pregnant. Alongside advice regarding my diet, I enjoyed regular sessions which were tailored to my health and wellbeing. Soon enough, I gained my period back early this year.”
