The school holidays are almost here and people are looking forward to their summer breaks. Maybe you’ve already been away this year, or you’re planning a winter trip instead.
Whatever the time of year, holiday fun can be blighted by upset tummies. Long travelling times, a change in water and foods, bugs and germs in air conditioned planes – there are many factors that can affect digestion, leading to constipation, diarrhoea, cramps, vomiting and fever.
These problems may be short lived, lasting only 2-3 days, but for some people, the pain, discomfort and altered bowel habits can continue for months and develop into Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
If you’re prone to these holiday stomach upsets, now is the time to build up your strength and immunity so you can enjoy every moment of your precious holiday.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture that I practise is wonderful for supporting digestive health. The links between our brain and digestive system are clear and well established; we know the gut has more neurotransmitter receptors than the brain itself!
Feelings of anxiety or excitement about travelling on holiday can trigger painful cramps, constipation and diarrhoea. The power of acupuncture lies in its ability to interrupt these emotional signals coming from the brain and soothe the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing anxiety and tension and regulating gut motility. Certain needle points can be used to stimulate the release of endorphins, our natural ‘happy’ mood chemicals, which also helps to ease stress and anxiety.
Alongside my acupuncture treatments I advise clients about foods and supplements which may be beneficial to them. To help prevent or deal with ‘travel tummy’ issues I recommend a comprehensive probiotic supplement.
These products contain different strains of the friendly gut bacteria that live in our digestive tract. There are billions of microbes living inside us – in fact we have more bacterial cells in our bodies than we do human cells! These bacteria make up around 80% of our immune system so if you are prone to infections or you are struggling to recover from a holiday bug, the chances are your microbes need support.
Gut bacteria are responsible for helping us digest foods, absorb nutrients, and repel invading microbes. If the ‘friendly’ bacteria are depleted, some of the more ‘unfriendly’ bugs can proliferate, leading to constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, wind and pain.
Using a good quality probiotic supplement alongside your acupuncture treatments offers holistic long term support for your digestion and can bring swift relief from symptoms.
To prepare for your holiday, take the probiotic for 2 weeks before you travel and everyday whilst you are away. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy your adventure!
