Migraine Relief with Acupuncture

Around 8 million people in the UK suffer from migraine headaches, making migraine relief the most common neurological treatment sought after from GP’s. It affects more than twice as many women as men. There are many different types of migraine including migraine with or without aura; abdominal migraines usually only found in children, and menstrual migraines which affect women either just before or during their periods.

The distressing aura symptoms (such as dizziness and sensitivity to lights and noise), severe pain and nausea can leave sufferers unable to work or enjoy life for days at a time. In extreme cases, migraines can last for several weeks.

The exact cause of migraine remains unknown though it does involve disturbances in the brains electrical systems which cause changes in blood flow and inflammation.

As with all health conditions, I treat the person not the symptoms as one person’s experience of migraine will be completely different to another. I look at diet and lifestyle to see what migraine triggers can be found, for instance;

  • a reliance on tea and coffee will leave your body dehydrated and overly stimulated which can trigger a migraine
  • poor sleep puts strain on your system and can lead to migraine
  • hormone imbalances and menstrual irregularities can cause menstrual migraines for many women
  • eating refined sugary processed foods upsets the balance of your blood sugar levels and this is a classic migraine trigger

Diet and lifestyle aspects are taken into account so that I can direct the acupuncture treatment not just to manage migraines but to support all areas of your system that are in need.

Acupuncture provides a safe, well researched treatment option for reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. The gentle stimulation of your body’s natural energies is proven to bring pain relief, improve blood flow and circulation and reduce inflammation in the brain.

Studies have shown how acupuncture strengthens your natural coping mechanisms and can be used effectively for both migraine prevention and the treatment of acute attacks. Of course another important advantage of acupuncture treatments over drugs and medications is the lack of side –effects. Painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are associated with increased risk of gastric bleeding, stomach ulcers and many other detrimental side-effects including ‘medication overuse headaches’!
