Nausea and sickness can occur for a whole host of reasons; pregnancy, travelling, post-viral nausea, after an operation or as a side effect of medications. Whatever the reason, feeling sick is an unpleasant and debilitating experience!
There are certain key acupuncture points on the body that can be used for nausea and sickness and as part of my holistic approach to your health I will use these points in conjunction with those which support your overall health and wellbeing. For instance, if the nausea is due to stress and overwork I will support your nervous system too; or, for post operative nausea we can look at helping your body heal and recover from the operation and improve your immune system.
Morning sickness can in fact last all day! It often eases after the first trimester though it is not unusual for the symptoms to continue through the second trimester too. Prolonged nausea and vomiting can put you and your baby at risk of nutrient deficiencies and dehydration so it is important to address the problem. Eating little and often, sipping ginger or fennel tea and nibbling on ginger oatcakes or biscuits can be helpful and work well alongside acupuncture treatments.
The acupuncture works by suppressing the upward muscle contractions from your stomach and regulating nerve impulses from your brain to your digestive system. It also supports kidney energy as this can be depleted during pregnancy; your kidneys regulate the levels of electrolyte minerals in your system (magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium) which influence your blood pressure, fluid balance and as a result, symptoms of nausea.
Research from Australia found acupuncture reduced the severity and incidence of nausea and retching during pregnancy with researchers stating that “acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for women who experience nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy”.
Nausea as a medication side effect
If you are unable to swap your medication for one with fewer side effects than acupuncture treatments may help you cope with them by balancing the nerve impulses from your brain to your stomach and supporting your liver in dealing with the drugs.
Ear Acupuncture for morning sickness
This is ideal if you prefer not to have needles placed on your body as I only use specific points on your ear. Your ear contains powerful master points for acupuncture which influence your brain and nervous system. I am fully trained in Auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) and can use this technique to bring rapid relief from a wide variety of complaints including nausea and stress.
