Acupuncture for back pain recommended by American College of Physicians

Natural Back Pain Relief | York Acupuncture Only last year NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) changed its mind about recommending Acupuncture for back care, removing it from the list of non-invasive treatment options for back pain and sciatica.

Now, the American College of Physicians have released a document entitled ‘Non-invasive Treatments for Acute, Subacute, and Chronic Low Back Pain: A Clinical Practice Guideline from the American College of Physicians’ that includes Acupuncture, endorsing it for both acute and chronic back pain.

Confusing, huh!

This kind of contradictory advice is so unhelpful, especially when back pain sufferers are faced with the prospect of having to take strong medications just to make it through the day, and a long waiting list to receive any kind of NHS treatment such as physiotherapy.

The problem with these types of guidelines is the potential for bias and personal and institutional influences.  Alongside the American College of Physicians, two other US agencies reviewed the evidence for Acupuncture in 2016 and came to the same conclusion: Acupuncture is a safe, effective treatment for chronic back pain.  So, this makes 3 US bodies in favour of Acupuncture, and the UK NICE against it!

But what about those who matter – the back-pain sufferers?

Improve Digestion with Acupuncture | York Traditional AcupunctureAs part of my Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments I regularly practise abdominal acupuncture to improve digestion with my clients.

Many ancient Chinese medical texts focus on abdominal acupuncture diagnosis, with the abdomen being described as the ‘root and foundation’ of a person.  So many vital organs are found in the abdominal region including the digestive tract, which we know now communicates constantly with your brain via its own nervous system called the enteric nervous system.

Gut-Brain connections and Digestion

Think of a time you felt nervous or anxious.  Did it affect your digestion?  Did you experience ‘butterflies’ in your tummy, or any aches and pains in your abdomen?  Our brain and digestive system are talking to each other all the time, which means our thoughts and emotions have an immediate impact on how we digest, assimilate, and utilise food.

I see many clients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a condition that is massively influenced by stress.  The way their brain is processing stress and the signals it is sending to their gut causes unpleasant and distressing symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, wind, and bloating.

The Vagus Nerve

One of the main highways of communication between your brain and gut is via the vagus nerve.  This is the largest nerve in the body, extending from the brain deep into the abdominal area, carrying nerve fibres that control both sensations and movement.  Over-stimulation or disruption of this nerve can cause many health problems, particularly in the digestive system.

The vagus nerve and all the other smaller nerves in the enteric nervous system produce neurotransmitters: chemicals that carry the messages from one nerve to another.

Serotonin is well known as being the neurotransmitter responsible for elevating mood and feelings of satisfaction and positivity.  But did you know that over 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut not the brain?  It is part of the gut-brain communication and influences gut function.

How does Abdominal Acupuncture work?

I can gather a lot of information about your health by looking at the skin of your abdomen: its colour, texture, and temperature reveal a great deal.  I may also gently palpate your abdomen, to check for any lumps or anomalies that may guide my diagnosis.

Acupuncture works by stimulating the flow of Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) around the body.  Blockages in Qi can lead to areas of stagnation, poor circulation, and accumulation of toxins which in turn manifests as ill-health and dis-ease.

Needling certain acupuncture points stimulates the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins which can ease pain, promote relaxation, and elevate mood.

There are 3 layers to your abdomen that can be stimulated accordingly;

  1. Superficial layer: found just beneath the skin, this area can influence pain and acute disorders
  2. Middle layer: this is the fat layer, just under the skin, which connects the external and internal environments
  3. Deep muscle layer: this is the deepest layer, and relates to chronic conditions and long standing ill-health issues.

Endometriosis relief – How Acupuncture Can Help

Endometriosis Relief | Acupuncture in YorkEndometriosis is a painful, life-limiting condition affecting around 1.5million women in the UK.  It is caused when endometrial tissue (the tissue that lines the womb) grows outside of the womb.  It can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tube, bladder bowel – even the lungs, brain and eyes can be affected.

Because these growths are made of womb tissue, they respond to hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle and can even bleed during menstruation.

Endometriosis can develop with very few symptoms and some women are unaware that they have it.

Signs and symptoms of the condition include:

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain when passing urine or a bowel movement

Acupuncture offers long lasting benefits for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia natural treatment | Acupuncture in YorkAre you suffering from the severe fatigue and muscle pains of Fibromyalgia?

This condition affects around 1 in 25 people in the UK and is something I see frequently in my Clinic. Fibromyalgia affects many more women than men – the reasons for this remain unknown – and can be associated with other life-limiting conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, headaches, depression and Restless Leg Syndrome.

The name Fibromyalgia literally translates as pain (algia) coming from muscles (my) and connective tissues (fibro). The exact cause of it varies from person to person but is often associated with stress, infections and changes in the balance of chemicals in the brain that regulate pain sensitivity.

Can medications help?

Unfortunately most medications prescribed for fibromyalgia do little to relieve the condition. Long term use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen and Naproxen can lead to digestive problems as the lining of the stomach gets damaged and inflamed: stronger painkillers are not recommended because of the risk of addiction.

Anti-depressants are sometimes used to relieve any depression and anxiety caused by the condition, and can also ease sleeping problems.

How can Acupuncture help?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture is proven to bring lasting relief to fibromyalgia patients. A recent study in Spain compared acupuncture with a placebo treatment. The group of 164 patients were assigned to either an acupuncture group or a placebo group (in this study, the placebo was sham-acupuncture) and all participants received their selected therapy for 10 weeks.

At the end of the trial, those receiving TCM acupuncture reported significant decreases in pain and improvements in fatigue, anxiety and depression, compared to the placebo group.

These improvements were shown to be sustained at a 12 month follow up too.

TCM Acupuncture brings relief from fibromyalgia by;

  • Stimulating nerves in muscles and tissues to release endorphins, the bodys own ‘feel good’ chemicals
  • Altering the balance of brain chemicals in favour of pain relief and mood elevation
  • Improving microcirculation in muscles and connective tissues
  • Reducing muscular inflammation

Will exercise and nutrition help too?

Gentle exercise can improve fibromyalgia symptoms – the trick is to exercise enough to feel the benefit but not to overwork the muscles! Yoga, swimming and outdoor walking are good forms of exercise to begin with.

Nutrition has much to offer for fibromyalgia. Dark green leafy vegetables, buckwheat and cashew nuts are all excellent sources of magnesium, a key mineral for muscle health and pain management. Oily fish, nuts and seeds provide healthy essential fats that can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Drinking plenty of water (at least 1.5l per day) is vital – dehydrated muscles will be painful muscles!

Epsom salt baths

Many fibromyalgia sufferers find warm baths soothing to their symptoms. Adding 1-2 cups of Epsom salts to a bath can make a huge difference: the salts are rich in magnesium which eases cramps and muscle pains and calms the nervous system.

Anxiety relief with Acupuncture

A new study from Japan has demonstrated just how effective Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture is for relieving symptoms of anxiety.

The pilot study looked at 10 patients who suffer with anxiety disorders. By measuring changes in blood flow and brain activity with near-infrared spectroscopy equipment both before and after the acupuncture treatments, the researchers were able to highlight changes in activity in parts of the brain associated with relaxation.

The results showed that acupuncture alters activity in this area of the brain, enhancing relaxation and reducing anxiety.

Anxiety is a crippling condition, leaving many sufferers housebound and afraid to enjoy life. It has a huge knock-on effect on digestive health too: I see many Irritable Bowel Syndrome clients with high levels of anxiety as the main trigger for their IBS symptoms.

How does Acupuncture work?

Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture is an entirely personalised form of care. At your first appointment I will ask many questions about your symptoms and health history, and look at your tongue and take your pulse. In TCM we can discover a lot about your health from your tongue and pulse!

The acupuncture treatment itself will be based on these findings and will aim to support the healthy flow of Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) around your body whilst nourishing and rebalancing areas of dis-ease. Qi is your vital energy – your Life Force – which becomes stagnant, disrupted and blocked during ill-health.

Research has shown TCM Acupuncture to be effective in relieving anxiety by:

  • Regulating the balance of mood chemicals (neurotransmitters) in your brain and nervous system.
  • Down regulating the ‘analytical’ side of the brain – this part of the brain feeds negative thought patterns and anxiety. Once an anxious thought takes hold, it grows and grows unless the thought pattern is interrupted.
  • Reducing anti-inflammatory compounds which become elevated when stressed.

Migraine Awareness Week – Let Acupuncture Help You!

What about menstrual migraines?

A lot of women experience an increase in migraines and headaches around the time of their period. This is linked to the complex hormonal changes occurring at this time: progesterone levels are relatively higher than oestrogen just before the period but both hormones drop once menstruation starts.

Acupuncture Reduces Menopausal Hot Flushes

Reduces Menopausal Hot Flushes NaturallyA new study has highlighted the lasting effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture for relieving hot flush symptoms in menopausal women.

Published in the journal Menopause, the study looked at the effect of acupuncture treatments versus no treatments on over 200 women aged between 45-60 years.

The women receiving acupuncture saw a 36.7% reduction in incidences of hot flushes after 6 months of treatment, with improvements starting to show after only 3 acupuncture sessions. Twelve months later, these women were still enjoying this improvement in symptoms, which demonstrates the lasting sustained benefits of acupuncture.

As well as far fewer hot flushes, these ladies also saw improvements in various ‘quality of life’ factors including sleep quality, anxiety and depression.

The control group who had no acupuncture treatments experienced a 6% increase in hot flush symptoms!

Menopause is a natural phase of life, not dis-ease!

Orthodox medicine so often views menopause as a state of ill-health to be ‘cured’ by taking Hormone Replacement Therapy. Some women appreciate the relief HRT can bring from symptoms; however this relief is frequently short-lived as once HRT is stopped, menopausal symptoms can return with a vengeance! This is because HRT is not a ‘cure’; it simply delays the drop in hormones that occurs at this time of life.

Many women prefer not to take artificial hormones and opt for a more natural route instead, supporting their body through this transitional phase with TCM Acupuncture, good nutrition and stress management techniques.

How does TCM Acupuncture help with menopause symptoms?

Some foods contain ‘phytoestrogens’; plant compounds that have a similar structure to human oestrogen but a much weaker action. These compounds can be helpful in assisting your body to cope with fluctuating oestrogen levels.

Such foods include:

  • Traditional soya foods like tofu, miso and tempeh made with organic GM-free soya beans. (Please note: processed soya foods such as Textured Soya Protein are not recommended)
  • Flaxseeds, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans and aduki beans
  • Sprouted alfalfa seeds and mung bean sprouts

Is a Food Intolerance aggravating your IBS?

Food Intolerances IBS  relief naturalDigestive problems are one of the most common reasons clients come to my Clinic. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects 1 in 4 people at some point in their lives and many sufferers cope in silence for years, feeling there is little that can be done to relieve their pain and discomfort.

Even without a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) it is common to experience symptoms of constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, pain and excess wind and struggle to find the underlying cause.

Food intolerances and IBS

Food intolerances can cause a wide range of symptoms: pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, wind, headaches, fatigue, and skin rashes – these are just some of the problems that can occur.

Food intolerance is different to an allergy. In cases of allergy, there is a strong immediate immune system reaction that can, in extreme cases, be life threatening. Food intolerance symptoms can take hours, even days, to manifest and whilst uncomfortable and life-limiting, are not life-threatening.

What kind of intolerances are there?

Sometimes the immune system can be involved in a food intolerance reaction and other times the problem is caused by an enzyme deficiency or irritation in the body from certain compounds in plants.

For example:

Proteins in certain foods may trigger production of certain immune cells called IgG antibodies. There may be symptoms associated with this reaction.

Lactose intolerance is caused by low levels of lactase enzyme, needed to digest the milk sugar lactose properly. Without sufficient lactase, symptoms of cramps, pain, wind and diarrhoea can occur quite quickly after eating dairy products.

Histamine intolerance: some foods contain high levels of histamine and other foods promote the release of histamine in the body. If you can’t breakdown histamine properly, you may suffer symptoms including rashes, migraines and digestive problems.

Can you test for intolerance?

Certain intolerances can be detected by noting down what you eat and how you feel after eating it. Lactose intolerance for instance occurs pretty rapidly after drinking milk or eating cheese or any other dairy products. Other intolerances, particularly ones involving IgG antibodies, are harder to detect.

When I see clients with ongoing conditions like IBS, I will talk to them about food intolerance testing. My colleague Sally Duffin is a Nutritional Therapist who offers IgG testing at her Clinic in York. Many of our shared clients have made significant progress with their conditions through a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture, food intolerance testing and Nutritional Therapy.
